In a bid to raise the remaining funds to complete and launch their second jumbo this spring, The St.Ives Jumbo Association are delighted to announce that they will be presenting an evening with yachting hero turned luggerman, Pete Goss. 'An evening with Pete Goss' will take place on Friday 9th April at The Guildhall, St.Ives at 7pm. Admission is £5.

For those of you unfamiliar with Pete Goss, he is an inspirational figure. His re-enactment of the courageous voyage of 1854 (when 7 desperate fishermen sailed from Newlyn to Australia in a small fishing lugger) is just one of many extraordinary achievements. Competing in the1996 Vendée Globe, a non-stop, singlehanded race round the world, he turned back into storm-force winds in response to a Mayday from the French competitor, Raphael Dinelli, thereby scuppering his own chances after 10 years preparation. His dramatic rescue earned him the Légion d’Honneur, France’s highest award for gallantry, an MBE and huge international respect. In recent years he has become well-known for his inspiring and empowering talks (more info see:

We are unbelievably fortunate to have Pete champion our cause. Quite simply, there’s no one on the planet better qualified to do so!

The best way of thanking him will be by selling out (we have 450 tickets). Please make every effort to come.

This is going to be a significant event for W.Cornwall bringing some maritime prestige back to St.Ives.

It will provide an excellent opportunity to reach out to new members and for some urgent fundraising.

There’ll be a raffle and a brief auction so please bring your chequebooks and your friends! A bar will be provided by the St.Ives Lions Club.

To reserve your tickets, please send cheques, payable to ‘The St.Ives Jumbo Association’, to:
