The Future of the Gaffers and Luggers Yachtyard

Upon Martin Heard’s unfortunate and sudden death on 21st July 2009, his son Sam Heard inherited the responsibility of the Gaffers and Luggers Yachtyard at Mylor Bridge, Cornwall. Sam has asked me to compose the following message to all readers of the website:

Sam is not intending to continue the firm as it currently stands but intends to sell it. Already he has a sound prospective buyer; however, exactly when, or if, the transaction finally takes place has yet to be announced. In the meantime all work outstanding is being reviewed with the intention of it being completed.

At present it is unlikely that any new owner of the boatyard will be building boats from the moulds previously used by his father; instead, Sam will acquire those moulds with a view to setting-up a completely new business under the same well-known name, that is to say Gaffers and Luggers which, to begin with, will probably be located at another nearby site, the location of which will be announced in due course.

Sam is delighted to have already received new orders for boats from the original moulds. Anyone interested in making enquiries about any of the range are cordially invited to contact Sam Heard by one of two methods:

  1. (Preferably) by e-mail: or otherwise
  2. Directly on his mobile telephone (which WILL, he assures me, be answered!) 07977 239341

In the meantime, please refer to the current business website for further information concerning the range of Gaffers and Luggers boats but PLEASE IGNORE ALL CONTACT DETAILS which appear thereon because no response will emerge from them.

Until such time that Sam has a new website of his own, general news as to his progress in setting-up and developing his new yard will, from time to time, continue to appear on this website. Any news which might directly affect members will be posted onto the Forum (either by Steve Lorraine or, if necessary, myself).

Thank you
Roger Stephens
