Improving the Gallery page?

Hello all. Since we started using this new website I have found it to be very good and easy to use but thought I would see if anyone else has any thoughts on how the Gallery page works.

The Gallery contains some great pictures but if looking for a specific boat you have to open each picture in turn to see the name of the boat. I would suggest that the name of each boat (the photograph title) should appear under each of the thumbnails. What do you think? Should the pictures be grouped into boat type? Any other ideas?

I've made a few improvements to the gallery page so you can now filter the photos by boat type using checkboxes. The names of the boats also appear when you hover over/tab on to each image. Let me know what you think so far?

If you're thinking of giving the Gallery a make over it might also be worth looking at tagging. Allowing arbitrary searchable tags to be attached to a photo is quite a simple and flexible way of sorting and filtering media. Using this scheme you could, for example, tag a photo of a fleet of boats with the names of the boats as well as the boat types. You could also have a dropdown list of standard tags (e.g. the boat types) to help prevent tag proliferation. This link is a working example that searches the Flickr website for the tags 'gaff' and 'sail'.

Hi Colin, I think instead of grouping the pictures into boat type we can provide some controls to allow people to filter the images by boat type. For example you could have a series of checkboxes or a drop down list containing each type of boat which when selected showed the relevant list of boats. That's fairly easy to set up. I think I could also provide a separate search for the gallery so you could search by boat name or boat type as well as filtering. Displaying the name of each boat under the picture is a good idea as well.
